App description

Minecraft - Pocket Edition is the mobile app version of the PC game ‘Minecraft’. The player must mine materials such as wood, stone and iron to build to create their own world.

Reviewers comments

Minecraft is a game in a randomly generated pixelated block world, where you break blocks to gain materials. With these materials the player can build structures and makes better tools to get more materials. There are two different modes in this Minecraft game. One is the creative mode where the player is given all of the materials such as wood, stone, iron etc.  In this mode, the player can creatively build their own world. Using the blocks of materials the player can build houses or make mine carts or anything they can think of.

The other mode is survival mode. In this mode the player starts with nothing and they must figure out how to collect building materials. The player is given no instructions. Therefore they must use their imagination and logical thinking to find the materials. The main way of collecting materials is mining underground with a pickaxe. The further underground the player goes the more valuable materials they are likely to find. The survival mode also includes monsters (see Violence for more detail). However, these monsters can be turned off in the settings. A player can be killed by either a monster, falling down too far or being crushed underground. If this happens, the player re-spawns in their original location and their structures will remain intact but they will lose all their materials that they have in their inventory.

Minecraft - Pocket Edition is a fun app that encourages a child’s creativity and logical reasoning skills.

No gambling content was found during this review.

Advertising and product placement

There is no advertising in the game but it is connected to the Minecraft franchise.

Other

Violence and Scary Material. Part of the game involves monsters attacking you. These monsters are pixelated block forms but they may be scary for younger children. The player can build a sword to attack and kill these monsters. No blood is shown during the attack, instead the screen flashes red after every hit and either the player’s or the monster’s health bar decreases. However, in the settings the player can reduce the difficulty which means there are no monsters. Another element of this app that may be scary for younger children is underground lava which can kill you if you fall in.

About games and gambling

Most games contain elements of risk, chance and knowledge, that is why they are fun to play. There is growing concern about the impacts of simulated gambling games on the health and wellbeing of children. That's why we are identifying games that contain gambling elements on our site.

The State Government of South Australia's web site http://nogame.com.au/ contains information about these concerns.
