What’s it about?

Zach and his Mum move to Madison after his Dad died so that she can take up a new job. Zach is curious about his unfriendly neighbour Mr.Shivers and his very friendly daughter Hannah. Zach thinks Shivers is keeping his daughter in the house against her will but when he manages to get inside the house Zach finds she is quite okay.  He does discover though, a whole library of books kept under lock and key.

When Zach manages to get one book open, he finds out why they were locked.  He unleashes the Abominable Snowman into the real world along with a ventriloquist dummy called Slappy (who is very evil), giant insects, a werewolf, garden gnomes and zombies who want to destroy everything and run riot through the town. It turns out Shivers is the author R.L. Stine and these creatures are from his imagination. It’s up to Zach, Hannah, Champ and Stine to find a way to put a stop to it.

What to look out for

There are quite a lot of scary scenes in this movie that would frighten younger kids such as:

  • The Abominable Snowman is very large with long claws and he chases and attacks Zach and his friends throughout the movie.
  • The werewolf is also very scary, quite large with long claws too and he growls and drools from the mouth.
  • The zombies coming out of their graves and following the trio, arms outstretched, are also quite scary.

There are also some violent scenes in the movie such as:
  • The Abominable Snowman bashes his head on a glass window knocking himself out. He then gets up and smashes through the glass grabbing at Zach and friends with his long claws.
  • Garden gnomes are on the attack with knives and axes. One throws a knife at Zach, narrowly missing him. Then they all attack and try to strangle Zach.
  • A giant insect jumps on top of the car that Stine, Zach, Hannah and Champ are in and starts attacking it. It then chases the car down the street causing it to turn over.

Moral of the Story

The main messages from this movie are to try and solve problems and to overcome fears.
