The Australian and Communications Media Authority has approved and issued a new Code (for FreeTV stations) governing betting ads in live sports programs. Click here for details. ACCM initial view is that the new Code on gambling is unlikely to satisfy parent’s concerns about the exposure of their children to this unhealthy influence.
Removing such ads from sports programs until 8.30pm helps somewhat. However, after that time, the ads will be back, even if the game hasn’t finished. This particularly puts older children and teenagers at risk.
Children and Media Australia (CMA) is a registered business name of the Australian Council on Children and the Media (ACCM).
CMA provides reviews, research and advocacy to help children thrive in a digital world.
ACCM is national, not-for-profit and reliant on community support. You can help.
