This review of AB Math Lite contains the following information:
This app was reviewed for approximately 1 hour
AB Math Lite is an educational app designed to practise solving basic mathematics problems through a series of challenges presented in three different mini games. Skills required are mathematics, logic and reasoning, reading and basic motor skills to select answers and navigate through the app menus and buttons
This app is a lite version of the full app. Unless the full version is purchased, some of the features and levels in the app are not available , eg only the easy difficulty level (of 4 levels) is accessible
On the home screen, there are three button, links to static ad for another game by the developer, a direct link to the app store for another game by the same developer and a link to the Facebook page for this game.
The home screen buttons are Player 1, High Score and Options. The features of these buttons are described below.
Player 1
This option leads the player into the games area where three mini games Calculations, Tables and Bubbles can be played, and the player history can be viewed.
A player can choose to play against the clock or to work through a continuous string of mathematical problems. When playing against the clock, a pinging sound occurs, alerting the player when time is running out.
In the Calculations and Tables games, players have a choice of answer modes:
Correct answers are rewarded with a green tick and a ping bell sound. Incorrect answers are awarded with a red cross and a blurt horn sound.
Once an answer is given to a problem, a new problem is presented.
The lite version of app limits the Calculations game to addition problems and the Tables game to a choice of 2 or 5 times tables.
The Bubbles game is a selection of sequencing games based on choices of classical (numbers), roman numerals, letters, and solving mathematical problems. A player must also choose from a selection of graphics/bubbles, within which the sequencing challenge is presented.
Game play involves four moving bubbles, which must be selected in order of the lowest to the highest. If a bubble is selected in the wrong order, the bubble changes to red and a new challenge is presented. Correct sequencing results in the bubble disappearing from the screen. New sequencing challenges are presented until the clock times out.
Scoring of the games appears to be based on the number of problems solved correctly within the time limit.
High Score
This option contains a table, which lists the mini games, the difficulty levels, the highest scoring player’s name and their score.
Options
Selection of this button leads to another screen, which contains the following buttons; Full Version, Rate this App, Change Names, Word Domino, Memo Flash, More Games, buttons. In the top left hand corner of the screen is a speaker icon, which switches sound on or off. In the bottom left hand corner there is an envelope icon, which opens up to information on contacting the developer.
The Full Version, Rate this App, Word Domino, Memo Flash, More Games, selections provide access to the app store where the full version of this game can be purchased and other games by the developer can be acquired. The Change Names button allows the names of up to four players to be entered or changed. The player names created here appear as a button on the home screen and in the high score table area.
The player has an option to unlock the ‘full version’ of the app for $2.26.
It is very easy to navigate to areas within this app, which lead to purchasing of the full version of this app and other apps by this developer. There is no obvious way on screen to escape the purchasing option once it is opened.
No information gathered in this app is shared online however, players are able to click on links to internet pages, to the developer’s Facebook page, and the app store.
