App description

The opening screen in this app shows all the letters of the alphabet and the player can toggle between upper and lower case letters. When the player clicks on a letter of the alphabet the voice over says ‘Lets learn about the letter L’ (which is then displayed on the screen in upper and lower cases), and then phonetically sounds it out, before offering a context for the letter ie ‘Lets launch the rockets’. After this an activity is offered to further consolidate this learning ie. the player clicks on one of three buttons to watch the rocket launch into the sky. Other examples of activities include building a robot, digging for treasure, or adding candles to a cake. To go back to the main screen the player must hold down the left arrow key for several seconds. Other options on the home page include practicing the alphabet with aural and visual cues, or singing along to the Alpha Tots ABC song.

Reviewers comments

This app provides many language based learning opportunities for the younger child including recognising and pronouncing the letters of the alphabet and comprehension ie. placing the letter in the context of a sentence. The voice over, music, and interactive activities are a fun way of engaging children in this type of learning.

About games and gambling

Most games contain elements of risk, chance and knowledge, that is why they are fun to play. There is growing concern about the impacts of simulated gambling games on the health and wellbeing of children. That's why we are identifying games that contain gambling elements on our site.

The State Government of South Australia's web site http://nogame.com.au/ contains information about these concerns.
