Crazy Gears is a fun and brightly coloured game that will appeal to a wide range of ages. It uses gears, pulleys, rods, and chains to show how different forces interact and impact on others. It starts at a simple level, which requires one action to pull the gear up to the next level, and becomes increasingly more complex as the different components are added. The app would help develop children’s problem solving and critical thinking skills, which are needed as the game progresses. It is an increasingly challenging game, which requires fine motor skills and parental guidance would be needed to assist young children.
In the Grown-ups corner, which is entered by tapping twice on the top left hand of the screen and then by solving a multiplication sum, there is access to the developer’s website and the option to purchase more apps by the developer from the app store. There is a handbook provided which details the fundamentals of the game and a walkthrough for when you get stuck. Adults can also create an online account with Edoki.
Crazy Gears is devloped by Edoki Academy who base their apps on sound educational principles. This one is grounded in Piaget’s constructivism and Papert’s constructionism theories. As such it is a well-recommended app to help children understand fundamental principles of physics while playing and having fun at the same time. There is also an option for the app to be played by children with cortical vision impairment.
Game play itself does not require any connection to the Internet. There is the grown-ups corner, which has a parental lock and therefore young children are unlikely to be able to access this content. However, it is still recommended that some parental guidance and/or co-playing is needed for children under 8.
