Disney Storytime is an app that reads classic Disney stories to the player or lets the player practice reading the stories themselves.
Disney Storytime comes with three free stories, ‘Toy Story: Starry Night’, ‘Tangled: Rapunzel’s Story’ and ‘Monsters, Inc: Always Time for a Laugh’ but you have the option of buying more stories (see In App Purchasing). The player can choose to have the story read aloud to them or they can read it themselves. The stories are accompanied by pictures, music and sound effects which adds to the reading experience.
In the read-aloud version, as each word is spoken, it flashes red so the player can follow along with the voice. Each book has a different voice but predominantly the stories are read with an American accent. This may be problematic if a child is using the app to learn how to pronounce words.
In the read alone version, the player can read at their own pace. The app also has a recording function which allows the player to record themselves reading the story and then listen to it. This function is beneficial when children are learning how to read as they can hear their own voice and practice saying the words. But this function can also be useful for parents to record their own voices reading the story and then their child can learn to pronounce the words by listening to the parent’s voice rather than an American recorded voice.
Yes: The app gives you the option of buying more books to read. The player needs credit to buy books. To get credits you need to access the ‘Grown Ups Only’ zone which is password protected. Credit packs range from $49.99 for 37 credits to $4.99 for 2 credits.
Accessing online information and settings is only available through the ‘Grown Ups Only’ zone which is password protected. In this area, Grown Ups can opt to receive updates via their email about the app, buy similar Disney apps and buy credit for more books.
