This review of Doodle Jump contains the following information:
The game was played for several hours over several days.
This arcade style game involves manoeuvring an alien (Doodle) across and up the screen (which looks like a piece of graph paper) by tilting the device from side to side. The aim is to move the Doodle from platform to platform while collecting items, shooting monsters (to do this the player taps the screen) and avoiding broken platforms. If the player is not successful they drop to the bottom of the screen and disappear. Throughout the game players gain points, and are encouraged to share their overall score with others on the leader board. However, you need to be logged into the games centre to do this. If you are logged into the games centre you can also play the game with others online. There are many opportunities to customise your Doodle character and even buy a soft toy that resembles this character in the app. However, both of these options cost real money, with one exception, where the player can win a small amount of in game currency (coins) by watching an ad.
This game is an entertainment based app with limited opportunities for learning. The gross motor skills required and eye hand coordination to tilt the screen may be challenging for younger children. The developers have gone to alot of effort with the graphics which mimic kid’s drawings. Although the app appears to be very child friendly there are several features (as mentioned above) that parents need to be aware of including links to purchase a branded toy, the ability to play with others online, and in app purchases (either by watching an ad or with real money).
There is a permanent link to a site where you can purchase toys that resemble the main character in this game.
