Kahoot! Play & Create Quizzes is an educational app which creates an environment of fun and play in which to learn in a wide scope of subject areas. A ‘Kahoot’ is basically a package which can be created by the user, such as a teacher in a classroom setting. The app also includes hundreds of Kahoots in its library. A Kahoot includes a study area where the user can learn by using flip cards, watching short YouTube videos, and answering multiple choice and true or false questions. Once the study is complete the player can attempt the challenge, either on his/her own and self-paced or other players can be invited to compete via messages, email, Facebook, Messenger, etc. The competitive challenge can be individual or team based. The challenge is also based on multiple choice and true/false statements and is a repetition of what has been learnt. Prizes are rewarded in the form of points and emotes (animated emotions/reactions with different characters that players can collect and use to express themselves in challenges).
The subject areas are broad and include: Science; Nature and Conservation; Maths; English Language and Literature; Learning a Language; Changing Climate; Current Events; and Human Rights, to name a few.
Kahoot! Play & Create Quizzes promotes a fun and enjoyable learning environment. The home page displays the challenges completed that week and challenges still in progress. It also shows the studies that have been completed. However, the home page is not particularly intuitive, and a good reading knowledge is required which makes the app unsuitable for under 6’s.
The Discover page and the Library are where all the current and top Kahoots are found. There is also the ability to create your own Kahoots which could be a fun thing to do.
The study element is about learning facts and information that can be regurgitated during the quiz. It would be beneficial as a fun quiz to do at the end of a learning unit. This type of learning, however, does not require any analysis or synthesis of knowledge but absorption of information and testing of memory. Nevertheless, it is likely to be fun and engaging for older children.
The online connectivity is a concern for children under 16, particularly as other players can join in a challenge. Parental guidance is therefore strongly recommended for children under 12 and it is recommended that parents learn about and engage at some level, with the app for children aged 12 – 15.
