This review of Montesorri Crosswords contains the following information:
All levels reviewed.
This App has two main sections; an open-ended movable alphabet and a crossword style game.
A well designed App that has been identified as high quality by teachers and reviewers alike – the two styles of engagement with this tool is beneficial. One mode of play is to use the letters as a movable alphabet – here children can make any word and hear the phonetic sounds blend together to form words. The second mode of play is as a crossword, with children identifying pictures and adding letter/sound cards to complete the levels. Again the App’s inbuilt sounds are beneficial with the child able to hear the sound of each letter as they use it, blending with other sounds to complete the word.
The ability to choose multiple levels of words extends engagement and means that teachers can use this tool progressively. The only concern with this app is that the free play mode (called moveable alphabet) does not correct spelling and so children could practice incorrect spelling and have phonetic feedback of sounds to assume they are correct (eg kat vs cat would “sound” the same in free play mode). This is in part mitigated with the two modes of play, where correct spelling is required in crosswords.
