Never Alone: Ki Edition is a platform puzzle game based on traditional stories of the Inupiat people, native to Northern Alaska. Players must guide a little girl named Nuna through harsh landscapes in order to reunite with her people who had to flee from danger. Nuna is accompanied by a little arctic fox that has the ability to summon good spirits that help her journey. Players can toggle between these 2 characters when required. Navigating through environments includes: jumping, climbing, swimming, avoiding wild animals (e.g.; polar bears) and manipulating objects.
Manoeuvres through some environments can be technically challenging (difficult to achieve the move you want to). However, most children should be able to persist with sufficient fine motor, problem solving and spatial awareness skills. The game developer’s age recommendation of 9+ is appropriate and in line with ACCM guidelines.
There were no concerns in the review of this game. In fact, the game is quite educational (with real videos between levels that detail the history and lifestyle of the Northern Alaskan People). As the game play closely follows traditional events of the Inupiat people, this not only reinforces the educational videos but also provides depth to the game itself. The game also promotes community values, environmental awareness and kindness to living things.
There are 24 educational video clips (that range from 7 – 20 MB per clip). Therefore, players may want to skip these videos if their devices have limited data plans. Apart from some very mild animated violence, there were no concerns found regarding any features of this app.
