App description

Numbers and Counting is an educational puzzle game for children learning the numbers 1 – 5. The player learns to recognise numbers by matching pairs of cards with the same number.

There are three types of memory matching card games, where the player must match the pairs of cards. In ‘Groups’ the player matches picture cards that have the same number of items. In ‘Numbers and Groups’ the player matches the number card to the picture card. In ‘Numbers’ the player matches the number cards. If the player matches correctly, the cards disappear. If the player is incorrect, nothing happens. If the player takes a while to choose a card they will get a hint. In all games the player can chose to have the cards face up or down. If the cards are down the player learns both memory and number recognition skills.

Reviewers comments

This game is designed for young children, however as the app requires access to credit card details, cellular data and Wi-Fi settings, it is recommended that parents play with children under the age of 8. Parental guidance is also recommended due to the presence of in-app purchasing and advertising. Parents do however, have the option to remove these from the game (see In-App Purchasing and Advertising for more detail) which would make it safe for younger children to play alone.

In App purchasing

The player can pay to unlock more numbers (1-10) for $0.99, a picture matching game for $1.99, or unlock everything for $2.99

  • To purchase these extra games the player must pass the ‘Parents Code’ barrier:

  • The parent can also turn off in-app purchasing in the settings on the app. To access the settings they must pass the parents barrier.
  • Once in app-purchasing has been turned off the player can still see the option to purchase more games but they cannot press the button to buy them.

Online information

Personal details required to download, play or interact with the app include credit card details, cellular data settings and Wi_Fi connection information.

Gambling

Advertising and product placement

  • On the main menu of the game, it advertises more app games by the same developer. However, this can be removed in the ‘for parents’ settings section. If the player clicks on the advertisement it will take them to the company’s app store.
  • If the parents have in-app purchasing turned on, the player will occasionally see a full screen advertisement for in-app purchases

Gender stereotypes and sexual references

  • At the time of review, the reviewer found no gender stereotypes or sexual references in the game.

Coarse language

  • At the time of review, the reviewer found no coarse language in the game.

Game playing behaviour which may be of concern to some parents

  • At the time of review, the reviewer found no concerning game playing behaviour.

Other

  • The voice narrating the game play has an American accent.  This might concern parents if their children learn how to pronounce numbers with a similar accent.
