This review of Sticker Doodle Yoodle Kids contains the following information:
All features of the app were trialed.
Kids will be inspired to express their creativity by creating their own avatar (Yoodle) and bringing them to life in their own animated sticker scene. The game begins with players selecting their preferred head shape, skin colour, hair type and colour, eye shape and colour, mouth, nose and clothes and gender. Kids can then type a name for their “Yoodle” before the adventure can begin. Players begin by touching the virtual scrapbook and selecting from six scenes, including a construction site, farm and underwater scene. There are a range of colourful stickers for kids to drag and drop into the scene, from farm animals to spaceships, providing plenty of opportunities for storytelling and language development. Kids are guided throughout the app by a friendly ladybird, with encouraging comments like: “Here we are, let’s doodle up a story”. Once kids write their story, they can email both the picture and their story to family and friends.
This creative and engaging app encourages kids to create their own character and build their own scene around which to weave a story. Parental co-play is recommended for under 9’s to maximise the learning opportunities by discussing what is happening in the scene and the role of their character in the story. There are opportunities to develop language skills and sequencing in storytelling; which is a key comprehension strategy for children to develop.
Fine motor skills are required to interact with the app, as kids must use their thumb and forefinger to pinch images to resize and rotate both the stickers and selected Yoodle. When they are happy with the stickers applied to the scene, they can touch the image of a scrapbook and the image appears to be inserted into the scrapbook. Once in the scrapbook, kids can touch a star to animate their scene, touch an information icon to write a story about what is happening in their picture, or touch an envelope to email their story and image. Although players are audibly prompted throughout, co-play will be required until children are competent readers and writers. Players can also save their story and created sticker scene to send it in an email to family and friends. Care should be taken to monitor children’s communications or restrict this capability in both the settings of the device and within the app itself.
Note: App may slow down the user’s device due to compatibility issues. Co-play is recommended for under 9’s as created images and stories can be saved and emailed to friends and family, depending on settings.
