All elements of the game were considered in this review.
Tag with Ryan is an addictively fun game where Ryan races around the world, during a game of tag, finding his hidden costumes.
This app is a game of strategy, modelled after the timeless schoolyard game of tag. This game requires good fine motor skills and hand eye coordination as the player uses four simple swiping motions to strategically guide Ryan as he manoeuvres through the colourful, cartoon terrain, collecting rewards.
The aim of the game is to see how far you can run in one game before colliding into a barrier and the game resetting.
Even though each run restarts back at the same location, the course constantly changes terrains and pathways and is therefore never predictable, increasing opportunities for fostering problem solving and strategy skills.
Some children may find repetitive failure distressing/overwhelming, so support to cope and manage these feelings may be necessary for emotional wellbeing. Also, see comments in 'In-app Purchasing' section of review.
There is In-App purchasing in this game, examples include:
There is in-app purchasing in this game and parents should be aware that pizza slices, which are the in-game currency, are rarely located in the maze. Therefore, the urge to buy pizza slices with credits is likely to be tempting, especially for young children wanting to impulsively extend level play, as 2 pizza slices can be used to override the conclusion of a run and is prompted each play with a countdown. Pizza slices, once collected or purchased, are also used to purchase items to enhance game play, such as buying Suns or Costumes for Ryan which give him increased functions and bonuses such as speed or shield protection when selected; Vehicles for Ryan to drive through the game faster with varying levels of shield protection; and Attractors which help the player collect more items in the game and makes opponent Gus appear more frequently, increasing Ryan’s chance of tagging him. No in-app adds were noticed during play which was a pleasant surprise for a free game app – revenue likely made by enticing players to buy in-app purchases.
