All available features were considered for this review.
Toca Life: After School is a virtual play space, set up as a club house for after school activities containing four themed levels. The player can move freely within the building and explore a variety of activities, and by tapping and dragging, characters and objects can be moved. Activities include riding a skateboard at the "Skate Park", eating food at the canteen, taking a shower and having a nap. The player can take the elevator to the next level to get creative at the "Art Workshop", where there are different paints and tools to choose from. They can also experiment with sounds and beats at the "Dance Studio". The rooftop features the "Sports Court" and a graffiti wall. Throughout the club house, there are a lot of things to discover and players can peek inside cupboards and cabinets, change channels on the radio, or dress-up characters. If parents allow access to microphone and camera roll, short video clips of game play of up to 2 minutes can be recorded and saved. This feature can also be disabled in the device settings.
Just like the other apps from the Toca Life series After School offers open-ended, interactive entertainment without instructions, scripted narratives or rules. The game designers have packed the space with a lot of interactive features, encouraging children's curiosity to explore and discover. Game play fosters paying attention to detail, and the player needs to use fine motor skills to move and place small objects. Some features invite the player to be creative, for example when exploring the painting, graffiti, or DJing section. The app can be reset to its original default settings within the device settings. Game play is free from advertisement, and within the device settings, parents can disable the parents' section as well as the features "Toca News", featuring news and offers on related products, and "Life Weekly" containing short promotion videos.
