Our Reviewer played to level 11.
Golf Battle allows players to compete against each other at mini-golf in real time. Putting is achieved by pressing on the ball, swipe left or right for aim, pull back and release for strength of hit. There are 2 modes; Classic – where least amount of shots to the hole wins and; Rush – where number of shots are unlimited, but it’s the first into the hole that wins. Players can choose different courses and each course is pay to play (e.g.; to play the Rocky Mountains course in Classic mode, it costs $225 virtual coins). The winner out of 6 players wins the top prize (e.g.; $500 virtual coins) and those in 2nd and 3rd place receive reduced prizes. There is also a “Lucky Shot” feature which can be played for free every 24 hours (or players can purchase 3 Shots for $2.99), which grants varying prizes depending on how close you get to the hole with one shot.
The 'Lucky Shot' mode in this game is very much a gambling style feature. As noted above, you can play once for free every 24 hours. However, with only one shot, it is very frustrating getting very close to a prize (and not being able to have any more shots which you’d usually be able to in other game modes). This may cause some players to purchase more virtual coins with real money to play further. With no guarantee that you’ll get into a prize zone, players are spending money for a risk and may not get anything at all. The other game modes are also very similar. Although the game starts you off with free virtual coins, enough losses will see the player locked out of playing the game altogether (or until free rewards are given over time). Hence, players may purchase more coins with real money. As you need to pay to play (and prizes are only rewarded for higher position winners) losing in the game may mean losing your real money.
