Lexi is a little girl who lives on a tiny planet and invites children to explore and interact with her world. To start with, the player can select any letter on a QWERTY keyboard. The smart keyboard then suggests subsequent letters to form a word. This way, children will be guided to spell correctly. Each letter is sounded out, and once a word is spelled out, it comes to life. For example, type Z-E-B-R-A, and a zebra appears. Only certain words contained in the app's dictionary can be typed, and the words are themed around animals, nature and related words and activities. By tapping on Lexi or one of the created animals, a thought bubble pops up suggesting what to type next. A horse may for example think of an apple, which it will then eat.
Lexi's World offers pre-schoolers and young primary school children a charming opportunity to become familiar with letters: what they look like, what they sound like, and how letters form words. Bringing the words to life is a fun way to get introduced to or to practice spelling. The app also encourages children to think about the relationship of words, and how certain animals, objects, and activities interact. As the app only allows the correct spelling of existing words, a sense of achievement and self-efficacy is guaranteed. On the flipside, older children may get frustrated that they are limited to the app's dictionary and that they cannot try to work out the correct spelling themselves because wrong letters are automatically blanked out. Thus, the app is probably most suitable for a young audience with no or little spelling mastery.
