This app mimics a traditional story book, with the addition of music that children can sing along to, and interactive elements. The opening screen on this app provides instructions for the user to either ‘poke or slide things on the screen to see what happens’. The developers offer a couple of opportunities for the user to practice these movements including poking a teddy bear to make it jump, and sliding a chef’s hat up to reveal a frog. These are the two skills required by the player to turn the pages and interact with the book. As the player turns the pages (using the arrow button at the bottom of each screen) of the book they can swipe to move the bus along the road, open and shut the doors of the bus, move the windscreen wipers etc. They can also poke the screen to make the people go up and down, make the dog go ‘woof, woof’ etc. While this is happening the music is playing in the background and the words of the song are printed on the screen.
This app provides an opportunity to develop literacy skills similar to those developed when reading a book. The accompanying musical recording uses realistic sounding instruments and provides the opportunity for the user to record their voice over the top of the instrumental music. The addition of the interactive elements mentioned above may also help develop fine motor skills and improve hand eye co-ordination, and add another level of enjoyment for the young reader.
