ACCM review

This review of the movie contains the following information:

A synopsis of the story

In an alternative timeline to the original Gundam universe (featuring giant robots, or mecha, with the name ‘Gundam’), Zeon Commander Char Aznable (voice of Shin Yuki) has stolen the RX-78-2 White Gundam from the Earth Federation. The Gundam is repainted in Char’s signature red colour scheme, becoming the ‘Red Gundam’. The acquisition of the Gundam is history-altering, leading to a Zeon victory in the conflict. However, both Char and the Red Gundam went missing in the final battle of the war and have not been seen since.

Five years later and despite the end of the conflict, life hasn’t gotten easier for those living in the Zeon colonies. After crashing into a refugee named Nyaan (voice of Yui Ishikawa), high school student Amate Yuzuriha (voice of Tomoyo Kurosawa) is introduced to the underground world of Clan Battle. Amate ends up in possession of the Gundam mecha GQuuuuuuX and meets the current owner of the Red Gundam, Shuji Ito (voice of Shimba Tsuchiya). Together they team up and enter a Clan Battle with their mechas. Amate soon discovers the battles are to the death and must work with Shuji to make it out alive.

Themesinfo

Children and adolescents may react adversely at different ages to themes of crime, suicide, drug and alcohol dependence, death, serious illness, family breakdown, death or separation from a parent, animal distress or cruelty to animals, children as victims, natural disasters and racism. Occasionally reviews may also signal themes that some parents may simply wish to know about.

Violence; Death; War; Crime.

Use of violenceinfo

Research shows that children are at risk of learning that violence is an acceptable means of conflict resolution when violence is glamourised, performed by an attractive hero, successful, has few real life consequences, is set in a comic context and / or is mostly perpetrated by male characters with female victims, or by one race against another.

Repeated exposure to violent content can reinforce the message that violence is an acceptable means of conflict resolution. Repeated exposure also increases the risks that children will become desensitised to the use of violence in real life or develop an exaggerated view about the prevalence and likelihood of violence in their own world.

There is some violence in this movie, including:

  • Two Zeon soldiers use mecha suits to blow up Earth Federation infrastructure.
  • An Earth and a Zeon mecha fight, shooting bullets and beam cannons. They then engage in close quarters with beam swords, with one decapitating the other robot.
  • A mecha robot blows up another using a beam cannon.
  • Char crashes into a ship using the Red Gundam, breaking a compartment open and presumably causing the death of the people inside.
  • Zeon soldiers rig explosives inside an Earth Federation base before setting them off.
  • Nyaan is running from the police at a train station and crashes into Amate, smashing her phone.
  • A Clan Battle member brandishes a pistol.
  • A Zeon soldier operating the GQuuuuuuX Gundam battles Shuji, inside the Red Gundam, using various weaponry.
  • The shield of the Red Gundam nearly crushes Amate and Nyaan.
  • Police destroy buildings that are homes to refugees, while searching for the Red Gundam.
  • Amate and Shuji engage in a Clan Battle, where they are shot at with guns and beam cannons. Amate decapitates an opposing mecha with an axe.

In a nutshell

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- is a movie based on the first episodes of an upcoming anime series of the same name. This movie may be confusing for first time viewers of the Gundam universe, as there is little explanation of the primary timeline and an assumption of previous consumption of Gundam media. Due to the violence, themes and coarse language, this movie is best suited for teens and up, with parental guidance recommended for children aged 11 to 13.

The main message from this movie is fighting for what you believe in.

Values in this movie that parents may wish to reinforce with their children include:

  • Courage
  • Friendship
  • Perseverance.

This movie could also give parents the opportunity to discuss with their children attitudes and behaviours, and their real-life consequences, such as:

  • The movie seems to portray theft in a positive light, at least in the case of vigilante justice. Parents may want to emphasise the real-world consequences of taking what isn’t yours.
